Locals: SCYTHE

Who are you? How old are you?

My name’s Luke Camilleri and I’m 25 years old!

How many months/ years have you been Djing / producing?

I started DJing back when I was 17 and started production a year later at 18, so in total I’ve been working on music for the last 8 years.

Mention an artist that inspired you to become a DJ/producer?

I was first extremely intrigued by the sounds of Industrial and darker elements with producers such as Ansome being my main inspiration back then, currently my main inspirations are the trancier artists such as Hoymans and KI/KI whilst also drawing influence from artists such as B2, Amstra and In Verruf.

Is there a local artist that you look up to and love to see play at events?

Too many to mention all of them, however its always a joy watching Natura2k, Inverted, Reactant, Parvatis and Müz on the decks, I also great appreciation for artists like Mulligan who do everything they can to provide a launching pad to local talent.

What skills do you think DJs need to be successful?

I think the main thing is being able to really read the crowd and staying authentic to your true self. I feel like recently there’s been alot of emphasis on trying to fit in a one size fits all box with artists forcing themselves to fit in a mould.

To the up and coming new local artists a word of advice from me would be always stay true to what you love, even if that means not gaining recognition for a while, your hard work will reach the right ears when the time is right.

How do you stay up to date with the latest music trends?

In all honesty my main source still remains SoundCloud, I follow a lot of artists on my personal socials and always try stay on the look out for new emerging talent within the scene.

What would you say is the most rewarding part of being a DJ?

For me it has always been seeing peoples reactions and the enjoyment I get when I produce is unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced.
