Locals: Parallel Motive Interview

Who are you? How old are you?

Michael (Age:26 – Alias: Aspekt) & Sean (Age:27 – Alias: Etched). We both are co-founders of the promotion Selekt.

How many months/ years have you been Djing / producing?

Collectively we have been performing numerous b2b gigs. This drove us to form a new alias together seeing the synergy we always had; roughly around 4 years djing together, our next aim is to push our new alias even further by putting in work on the production side of things under this new project.

Mention an artist that inspired you to become a DJ/producer?

I think mostly what inspired us started off from the local scene. One promotion which stands out the most would definitely have to be Disorder’s events, having been present for them since our early days. We can both say they were the main educators for us; though there are so many to name that we like to draw inspiration from & all of them play a part in our musical upbringing, after having numerous multiple festivals and events abroad in different countries & learning about the culture the music holds is what has triggered our passion to be a part of & also contribute towards it.

Is there a local artist that you look up to and love to see play at events?

There are numerous to make mention of, namely our close friends whom have all been shining lately & other promotion residents that we share the dancefloor with often; we are proud to see such talent thriving around the island and won’t put it down to one name; they all deserve recognition.

What skills do you think DJs need to be successful?

To always be creative, never limit oneself & to always push your boundaires to impress yourself, before you aim to impress anyone else. We think the word successful is subjective too; we feel that as long as there are smiles on peoples faces on the other side of the stage; that’s enough success for us to know we’re doing the right thing.

How do you stay up to date with the latest music trends?

No particular way, we have our own artists & record labels that we keep a close eye on & follow regularly when it comes to that side of the spectrum. However it definitely is worth mentioning that both Soundcloud and Bandcamp are both proven to be the best in the field to discover new music as well as artists.

What would you say is the most rewarding part of being a DJ?

Without a doubt the sense of unity and joy across the wave of people that are in front of you, the satisfaction knowing that people are vibing out to your selection, choice of tracks and direction for the narrative you’re trying to push truly is feeling that is priceless & unparalleled.
