Locals: OBLX Interview

Who are you? How old are you?

My name is Stanley Mark Iles. I’m 45 yrs old and my DJ moniker is OBLX.
I’m a DJ/ Promoter and event organiser.

My current projects are BLITZ in Playground, RESONATE in Clique and THE CODE in Tigullio.

I’m currently working on some collabs with local & international DJ’s and event organisers to continue to evolve and grow my brands.

To mark the 1st year Anniversary of BLITZ  –  I have teamed up with Joshua Calleja and I can finally confirm our first international artist for 2024.

Lindsey Herbert will be performing in Malta for the first time on Friday 23rd February in Playground. The event will be uploaded on social media shortly.

As regards to my music preferences, these are inclined mostly towards techno and it’s many sub-genres but not just.

How many months/ years have you been Djing / producing?

I have been djing for almost 3 yrs.

Producing is something that I haven’t really explored as yet as I’m super busy with bookings but it is something that interests me a lot and will definitely look into in the upcoming year.

Is there a local artist that you look up to and love to see play at events?

There are a few to be honest but my favourite 3 are PATIENT, MANTHRAX and JUNIOR B.

I relate to these artists for their knowledge, experience and diversity in many sub genres that they play throughout their sets. Their performances are usually super sonic journeys of sheer energy from start to finish.

What skills do you think DJs need to be successful?

In today’s world, talent is not enough. They must have sheer determination, perseverance, passion and constantly motivate themselves whilst staying humble.

They need to constantly promote themselves on social media and evolve accordingly.

How do you stay up to date with the latest music trends?

I spend a lot of time listening to new sounds and sets from upcoming and recognised artists alike mostly on soundcloud.
I’m constantly looking for artists/ producers with a specific sound which relate to my preferences such as Deep/ Raw/ Industrial & Hypnotic sounds.

I also like to support and follow local and international events to keep up to date.

What would you say is the most rewarding part of being a DJ?

A DJ has the power to change people’s moods with the music that they play.

The most rewarding part is the ability to create a unique and exciting atmosphere for the people listening. I would also add that a good DJ has the ability to give people a good time, surprise them, make them discover new sounds that resonate with their preferences and personalities. For me it is also about seeing the big smiles and positive energy in front of you.

Thanks to DJing, I’ve met great people along the way and made friends for life.
