Locals: MORPH Interview

Who are you? How old are you?

I am Matthew Galea and I am 25 years old.

How many months/ years have you been Djing / producing?

I have been Djing for about a year and a half.

Mention an artist that inspired you to become a DJ/producer?

My love for techno has been developing for a long time. However when I discovered DVS1 I got really inspired to start my journey as a DJ. He helped me understand how beautiful and supporting the scene can be.

Is there a local artist that you look up to and love to see play at events?

It’s a bit difficult to pick just one artist because there is so much talent around. However an artist I respect a lot for the work he does towards the local scene is Manthrax. I also love the work of Kontal and how far he’s going on an international level. I really love sets from Etched and Aspekt.

What skills do you think DJs need to be successful?

I think the most important thing to be successful is to stay true to the reason of why you started. Practice and analysing mistakes are also very important.

How do you stay up to date with the latest music trends?

I don’t follow any particular trends. I usually try to stay up to date with certain labels that I have been following for years. At the same time I keep an eye out for labels and artists I haven’t discovered yet, both old and new

What would you say is the most rewarding part of being a DJ?

For me, sharing a couple of hours worth of music with people who are there to experience the journey is very satisfying. I have experienced a number of sets where I felt like I belonged, and the opportunity to try to do the same for other people is the biggest reward I could get.
