Locals: Joseph Spiteri Interview

Who are you? How old are you?

I’m Joseph Spiteri, 21 years old

How many months/ years have you been Djing / producing?

I’ve been producing for the past 4 years and  I recently started playing this year.

Mention an artist that inspired you to become a DJ/producer?

Although I moved on from that type of music, John Digweed has been a big inspiration to me from the very start.

Is there a local artist that you look up to and love to see play at events?

There is way too much talent in Malta to pinpoint a single person, but recently I’ve been enjoying myself at any of the events ‘WaX’ host. They are really pushing for the love of the local scene!

What skills do you think DJs need to be successful?

First and foremost, I think the most important thing is to always remember where you came from. Staying humble is the key to success in everything.

But from a DJing perspective, being able to read the crowd and visualizing the setting of the venue is a very important factor too.

Finally I think the djs’ most important job is to introduce new music to the crowd and that’s where production helps a lot as you can you express your sound extremely well.

How do you stay up to date with the latest music trends?

Honestly I don’t think music should follow a trend, most of the tracks that I like to play feel timeless. A perfect example of this are tracks by Slobodan & Mhonolink compared to Shdw & obscure shape newly founded label ‘Mutual rtym’ adding a new twist on the oldschool sound.

However I make sure that i keep up to date with new music by following labels and artists on Bandcamp. While also listening to mixes on SoundCloud is great way to discover new music aswell as artists.

What would you say is the most rewarding part of being a DJ?

Seeing the smile on everybody’s face, especially when you drop one of your own tracks.
