Locals: HUMAN RED Interview

Who are you? How old are you?

I am Geordie Attard, a 27-year-old local passionate about electronic music. Founder of Malta School of Sound and Xokk , doing this Full Time.

How many months/ years have you been Djing / producing?

I have been DJing for 11 years and producing music for about 8 years.

Mention an artist that inspired you to become a DJ/producer?

I have always had an interest in music. As a teenager, I became fascinated with electronic music, although I cannot recall who inspired me to start DJing. However, I still remember those nights when I was 16, listening to previous albums from Plastikman, and being lost in those sounds. As I grew older, my taste in music evolved, and I came to appreciate many different artists.

Is there a local artist that you look up to and love to see play at events?

Acidulant is incredible. I still remember seeing him live for the first time 8 years ago at Playground.

What skills do you think DJs need to be successful?

When DJing, it’s important to remember that the crowd often enjoys hearing music they didn’t know they wanted to hear. Understanding how to use DJing equipment is easy, but building and maintaining a diverse and exciting music library is what sets you apart. Nowadays, being a DJ requires more than just the ability to mix music. To succeed, you need to develop branding, marketing, networking, and self-discipline skills.

How do you stay up to date with the latest music trends?

I usually listen to new playlists on Spotify to discover new artists when driving. However, I often achieve this by exploring YouTube playlists and browsing on Bandcamp.

What would you say is the most rewarding part of being a DJ?

Definitely the feeling of having control over the crowd and seeing them enjoy my music.
