Locals: FRESH PRINCE Interview

Who are you? How old are you?

I am Jake recently known as Fresh Prince but some may also recognise me as the darker half of the the former duo Monochrome. I’m 29 years old.

How many months/ years have you been Djing / producing?

I’ve been DJing for 15 years. I’ve moved a lot from one sound to another, I was always enticed by the unknown.

Mention an artist that inspired you to become a DJ/producer?

I first got introduced to electronic music by the sounds of Eric Prydz, one of the most versatile producers on the planet albeit more known for his commercial side. Along the years I’ve been inspired by tons of great artists. Recently I’ve been digging the sounds of Octo Octa, Spray, Dold and Pearson Sound.

Is there a local artist that you look up to and love to see play at events?

I’m a big fan of CND at the moment, their selection is second to none. I’m also a big supporter of Edd who’s been producing some great stuff from his studio which is being supported widely abroad.

What skills do you think DJs need to be successful?

Storytelling is a key skill, not just recognizing a great track but also knowing the right time to play it. Understanding the chemistry between the crowd is important and being open to move forward and play new sounds is key.

How do you stay up to date with the latest music trends?

I don’t consider myself as person who’s up to date with trends. I do however love to listen all types of music ranging from movie scores to salsa and allow these sounds to inspire me to play whatever I think I should be playing at that time.

What would you say is the most rewarding part of being a DJ?

The responsibility of setting the tone and energy of the night is one I take huge pride in and it’s always my mission to execute it well. One of the most rewarding feelings is when people walk up to me months after a particular set and mention how great that particular moment was, it’s truly a great feeling.
